For Women: 7 Quirky Ideas to Help You ACE an Interview

We all have our ups and downs going through that interview process, but have you ever thought of what you can do to help you ace an interview? Well, after looking through a lot of research and studies, we have found these 7 witty, quirky, yet professional ideas to help you ace that interview!

Please note that this post is not only focused on job interviews in Japan but also considers a global mindset and psychological aspects.

1. Glasses ON

Tale as old as time – psychologists and experiments have proven that the glasses stereotype is here to stay. A study has shown that 1 out of 3 adults think spectacles make one look more professional, whilst 43% believe it makes the person appear more intelligent.

“It is possible that some people have more self-confidence and change their behavior when they put on glasses, which could in itself improve their chances at an interview.” – Psychology Professor Cary Cooper (Lancaster University)

According to Psychology News and Review, we also view people who wear glasses as more competent, more industrious, and most importantly – more HONEST! Spectacle wearers ain’t got no time to tell fibs, they say – so why not put on a pair of glasses and give yourself a better chance to get that dream job?

2. Hair up like a BUN!

Research has grown to show that tying your hair up, in general, does give a better impression to your potential “boss-to-be.” Neat and comfortable are the keys to unlocking that grand first impression – I mean, who doesn’t want someone meticulous about their appearance? We all want someone good looking than someone shabby, right?

Experts recommend the following hairstyles to ladies out there: a ponytail, a bun, a top knot, or a French twist!

3. Flash that WATCH

Wearing a watch can show you pay attention to detail – from your dress and appearance to your wear. Just don’t be too flashy – otherwise, you might come off as COCKY and ARROGANT! No need for that fancy ROLEX, but just keeping it down to a simple, professional-looking watch would be fine.

4. Bling Bling Jewelry

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but what’s “too much,” and what’s appropriate?

Well, inside experts say dangly earrings are off the closet – bracelets included (even the foot), but as long as you KEEP IT SIMPLE, you will look stunning! Smaller hoops or stud earrings will accentuate your professionalism! And, of course – diamond rings are simple yet shiny to go that extra mile. Pearls, either a string or a pendant, are excellent choices too.

5. Perfume bomb OFF

You might think smelling good would give off a better impression, right? But we are all SENSITIVE to different smells, touches, and whatnot.

So, our kindest words of advice for you are to put on that cologne and perfume for a date night instead of your next job interview. Your partner wouldn’t mind your strong fragrance as much as your next boss would! Experts say that odors are linked with emotional memories – good and bad. So don’t leave that stinking impression behind – smelling like a CHEESY skunk!

6. Belt or no belt?

A debatable choice for an interview, but we recommend tightening up that waist and showing them how slim, chic, and fit you are! I mean, everyone wants to hire someone who has a fashion sense and knows how to show off their figure. However, word of WARNING from fashionistas is not to go overboard with a Gucci or Louis Vuitton – no one wants a stuck-up show-off! Simply style it to match the color and possibly the quality of the leather on your shoes, as recommended by expert men.

7. Hat OFF

Sure, the Queen of England can rock that hat off any royal occasion and make “grand” statements but remember, you are just a mere peasant of mankind. Hats won’t suit you or make you royal – it will only further emphasize your overdone look. So, keep it simple and leave that hat for a truly “royal” occasion!
