The Problem with Today's Promotional Culture: Why it's Exhausting Everyone (Including You)
Everywhere you look, everything is trying to sell you something.
Not just brands. Not just companies.
People. Ideas. Identities. Lifestyles.
Promotion is no longer a layer on top of culture.
It is the culture.
In 2026, we're all living in a giant showroom. Every scroll on LinkedIn, Instagram, or X feels like walking through an endless aisle of personal brands. "I 10x'd my revenue." "Lessons from my morning routine at 4:47 AM." "Why I left my six-figure job to pursue my passion (and you should too)."
What started as a tool for visibility has morphed into something more pervasive: promotional culture. The expectation that everyone, professionals, creators, even introverts, must constantly market themselves, their achievements, and their "journey" just to stay relevant.
It's not just annoying. It's eroding authenticity, deepening inequality, and quietly burning people out. Because when everything becomes promotion, the rarest thing left is something real.
I don't believe we need to abandon self-promotion entirely. Sharing your work, building a network, and highlighting real value still matter in a competitive world. The problem isn't promotion, it's the culture that makes it feel mandatory, performative, and endless.
