Poker Tour of America, which announced a provisional schedule in 2009
After PokerStars launched its own LAPT, Vega Promotion Systems decided to move the poker tour in a different direction to avoid confusion and expand into new markets. Accordingly, they changed the brand of the tour to PTA – Poker Tour of the America. The company was considering starting a second tour to focus on North America, but instead decided to combine it into one comprehensive tour. The company was already negotiating with various locations in Puerto Rico, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. As it combines and expands the tours, it is currently seeking further visits in the U.S. and Canada. The expansion will make the PTA one of the largest poker tours in the world, which will feature many top-notch poker professionals. Vega plans to air the tournament in North and South America, with him as executive producer, to provide tighter control over the tournament with ads sold during the PTA. "Unlike many poker programs on television, we're not trying to sell the rights to programmers," Heron pointed out. "[We] will own the program and we will sign up for the time slot needed to run the hour-long show. This will allow the company to benefit from advertising, sponsorship, reruns of the program, and the tournament itself." The PTA plans to increase the number to six in the following year, with five stops scheduled for 2009. The date and location have not yet been confirmed, but it is currently being announced: Ecuador Guayaquil (February 21-27) San Jose, Costa Rica (April 10-17) VANCOUVER, British Columbia (June 5-12) Cartagena, Colombia (August 15-21) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (October 24-30) The tour also includes the season-ending Tournament of Champions, but details about the date or venue of the event have not yet been released. All events are invitation-only and players around the world can earn a spot online and through live regional satellite tournaments.
