*English translation below

AMATA’s Art Club

Hi, I’m Steph. I usually help out with the english translation of these blog posts, but this will be my first real contribution to the blog!

I am a game artist at AMATA, but before I joined this company, I’ve been living all my life in Australia.

Back in Australia, I would keep in touch with my artist friends by regularly hosting drawing get-together events, where we would discuss about other relevant art events, talk about our techniques and share info about other topics such as movies, games, whatever is interesting.
Doing these events with friends has always been inspiring and I usually make something cool in my sketchbook, so I thought drawing together with other people will become a good habit.

When I came to AMATA, I saw there were already a number amount of clubs being established, but I was surprised there wasn’t one for art. So I decided to start the Art Club!

The main goal of the Art Club was to hopefully inspire other colleagues by posting breathtaking artworks on our company’s message boards, and to share information to other fellow artists that may be hard to access due to language barrier.

I have been thinking for a while that I wanted to try hold a sketch meet for our employees, but my lack of Japanese skills made me nervous. I had doubts like ‘what if I can’t hold a conversation properly with the others?’, and ‘what if no one shows up?’

But the yearn to become inspired was stronger than my worries, and thus decided to hold the first Sketch Meet!

The people who came to join were not only limited to our designers, but to anyone who even has the slightest interest in art and drawing. That’s why we had a few of people from other departments who felt less confident about their drawing skills (but despite their lack of confidence I still commend them for showing up!). The last thing I want is to make people feel uncomfortable just because they don’t draw.

So we started off with my favourite drawing game; drawing Pokemon from memory! It’s something that most people can understand (with how successful the games are), and it’s a game that relies more on memory rather than drawing skills. We had so many interesting results that had everyone in laughter, or left us in awe.

Can you guess which Pokemon we tried to draw? lol

Next we also tried a few experimental exercises, like drawing the person in front of use with our less-dominant hand, and then making one of the engineers to model for us while we drew him however we liked (thank you for modelling for us!).

Justine, another fellow artist drew me using her less-dominant left hand!

Finally we ended the session with free draw and idle chatting. While I originally thought 1.5hrs of drawing might be too long, our session finished within a blink of an eye! As they say in English, “time flies while we’re having fun”.

I’m glad it ended up being fun, and also relieved to hear from the others how they enjoyed their time. I was also surprised that quite a lot of people joined us for the first Sketch Meet!A big thanks to everyone who attended and helped out.

Since then I’m always thinking about how to make the next one better. I’m still a newbie at organising such events, but hopefully one day we could have things like a life drawing sessions where we could bring in a professional model and improve our drawing skills! That still may be far off but for now, let’s just draw and chill!
