日本に決めた、4ヶ月のインターンシップ

私は中国で生まれ育ち、現在はアメリカのシンシナティー大学で工業デザインを学んでいます。現在3回生で、大学の最初の2年間、独学で日本語を学習しました。 アメリカの大学では学生はよくインターン活動を行いますが、海外インターンシップは80人中3人でした。私はそのうちの一人で、今回日本を選びました。なぜなら日本にはたくさんの素敵な作品（グラフィック、パッケージ、製品、建築）を育てるデザインに対する哲学が有名だからです。 インターンシップはwantedlyを活用して探し、そんな中スターフォームと出会い、Skypeで一度テレビ面談を行いました。その際、このコミュニティに問題なく適合できると思い、社長の誠実さのおかげで、今回この4ヶ月間の海外インターンシップというチャンスを獲得しました。

Hi there, this is Sangyu. I was born and raised in China, and went to the United States for the undergraduate school, where I study industrial design. In the first 2 years of my college, I learned Japanese on my own. In March 2019, I applied for the internship of Starform through Wantedly, and Mr. Yamashita (the boss) is so sincere that I felt I’m able to fit into this community smoothly. I’ve been lived in China until adulthood, and 4 years in few cities in the United States, however, either of them can surpass Japan. The reason why I want to do my internship in Japan is because there’re tons of great designs in this country (graphic, packaging, product, architecture etc.) that nurtures the outstanding design philosophy. By taking advantage of the holidays in Japan, I travelled around this country (it’s small and convenient enough for me to do that in 4 months) and got to see lots of excellent design works in person. The colleagues in Starform are welcome and enthusiastic, who helped my A LOT on improving my Japanese. When I confront an unknown word, they would patiently repeat it until I get it after searching in dictionary.

大変だったビザ申請、緊張した初仕事

日本の就労ビザを取得するのは、外国に住む人によっては、違うプロセスを踏む必要があります。私の場合は日本大使館の承認が1か月ほどかかり、その後1週間でビザを申請する必要がありました。会社側もビザ申請の処理をしなければならず、スターフォームも行政書士に依頼して、ビザ申請の処理を行ってくれました。私は、学校の申請が遅れたことにより、1ヶ月も本来の期間より遅れてしまいました。なので皆さんには前もって申請することをおすすめします。 私はスターフォームでの初めての仕事の日をはっきり覚えています。たくさんのことが初めての経験でしたが、最も緊張したのは日本語でのプレゼンテーションです。 しかし、片山さんは翻訳を手伝ってくれました。また、Googleの翻訳を使って私のアイデアを社長に伝えました。誰も私を非難することがなく、実際はまったく逆でした。スターフォームの皆は非常にいい人です。

Starform has payed for all the charges of my working visa application, and catching up with me through the whole process. I’m very grateful for that. People with different nationalities may go through different processes, but in my case, to get the Certificate of Education from Japan embassy cost 1 month, and after that the visa application cost 1 week. I still remember the first day I came to work. There were a lot but the most nervous one is doing presentation in Japanese. However, Mr. Katayama and Google translator has helped me to communicate with Mr. Yamashita. Nobody has ever get tired of teaching me things, exactly the opposite: they’re very nice to me.

仕事でも遊びでも新しいチャレンジを

スターフォームでは、たくさんのグラフィックデザインをしました。Spobookのテンプレートをデザインし、またUIデザインでは、SpobookとSpobumのWebサイトをデザインしました。目的が決まれば、達成するための手段は自由です。スターフォームでは私がチャレンジしたいことをする自由を最大限に与えてくれました。 Webサイトの使用方法を明確にするため、製品についてのアニメーションによる説明のモデリング動画を作成するなどで、blenderやAfter Effect、AdobeXDなど新たにスキルを身につけることができました。 私は工業デザイナーなので、スターフォームでの仕事内容は、私の想像とは少し異なりましたが、私はこの経験に非常に満足しています。 社長は焦らすことはせず、十分に待ちながら私の仕事を支えてくれます。それはデザイナーにとって最も信頼できることです。 友達がたくさんでき、日本語も上手になり、多くの新しいソフトウェアを学び、日本の文化をより深く知ることができました。日本での休日では、私はいろんなところに旅行することができました。この会社のおかげで、つまらないころはありませんでした。

In Starform, I did lots of graphic design - Spobook’s templates, and UI design - Spobook and Spobum. Starform has given me the maximum freedom. For instance, the animations of the instruction of Spogift’s website and product presentation. Mr. Yamashita has given me enough trust and patience, that’s the best support a designer could ask for. Since I study industrial design, what I did in Starform is a little different from what I imagine, but I’m very satisfied with this experience so far - I made friends, speak better in Japanese, learned lots of softwares, know Japanese culture much better. Because of the 3-day holidays that happen almost every month in Japan, I was able to travel around and thanks to the location of the company - the lively business complex in Osaka - I’ve never felt boring.
