My thesis compares recycled and secondhand clothing markets in the EU and Japan — looking at market size, consumer trends, and industry practices to understand which region is further along in making sustainable fashion mainstream. I then zoom in on Japan through my own consumer survey, digging into what Japanese buyers actually think and do when it comes to recycled clothing. To make sense of the findings, I apply economic theories as a lens — looking at how people make purchasing decisions, how product information affects trust, and how new ideas gain traction in society. The goal of my research is to clarify whether Japan has the consumer foundation to support a thriving recycled textile market — the way many European countries already do. Having lived in Japan and worked in the sustainability space here, I want to understand whether that foundation already exists, or what it would take to build it. With a personal interest in healthier lifestyles and reducing waste, I see real potential for circular economy businesses in Japan — and this research is my way of testing that hypothesis.
